We hear a lot regarding, “the knowledge economy.” But unless we live in part of the world where countries face thousands and thousands of people unemployed, we may not have access to consider what this change in the fabric in our world means for education and the economy within the developing world. I put education as well as economy together, because they are therefore closely linked that policymakers consider all of them jointly. It is still true that education should be the answer to the extremely the indigent everywhere learning, growing, and eventually fully participating on the planet. These are modern countries where some people enjoy the same luxuries and access that people within the West enjoy, but who is challenged by large percentages of the populations living in extreme poverty simultaneously. We have to remember that the college, as we know it, developed under much the same circumstances during the early days from the Industrial Revolution. This article may be the first in a series on the challenges for education with an international scope for the next decade or even more. The world has seen this as a regular story going back 15 or 20 years, as technology has changed the face area of most work environments. It’s a harder challenge still whenever you were taught to train people, since you first have to understand the new requirements after which completely redo almost everything about your work, and finally you are ready in order to roll out new work to brand new standards. The world must address how to retool our communities, but especially those in the building world, so that students coming out of school are ready to take jobs in the knowledge dependent world, looking to join that world rather than asking the government to deal with them, and that they will happen to be taught in educational systems set as much as meet those needs.
